ABSENCES

Conceived as a portrait series as much as a collection of still lifes; Absences began with an enamoration with Dutch and Flemish vanitas paintings of the late Renaissance and the ghostly effect of their removed scene-makers. In that vein, the series centers on the omitted subject, exploring the lingering effects of a fabricated family’s presence on their world between - and perhaps long after - the moments they were in them. Through the dense menagerie of objects we can parse together an image of these people, collecting together the often unnoticed possessions and habits in which their existences are felt in the absence of their physical presence.
